OK so numbnuts (aka me) I got the ST66 (Looks a OK little camera) OK so I go to the support page and download the firmware (stick it on the memory card) I press the shutter button to start the upgrade which I thought had completed successfuly. Imagine my horror when I turn it back on and the lens is stuck in the open position and no button is responsive no more (Great start to my new camera)! Is that typical? Or is this a call to the samsung support centre?

Did you charge the battery between getting the camera and trying to update the firmware? Did you format the card in the camera before copying the firmware onto it? Have you done a reset using the menu if one exists in this camera? Have you taken the battery out and put it back in to reset the camera? Edit: presumably reset will not work if all the buttons are dead?

Have you done a reset using the menu if one exists in this camera? Have you taken the battery out and put it back in to reset the camera? The card itself is brand new (just out the packet thing as I bought it with the camera) I assume it would not have needed a format in that case? I did have battery on charge all the time and I am fairly certain that it was charged completely. I can't get into the menu infact I can't get any options to load up at alll (Tried googling to see if I can get maybe a hard reset but can find nothing) Battery has came out the camera and back in which does do something if I press power button i.e. Lens closes but immediately reverts to the stuck open option again. I have had EXACTLY the same thing happen.

In my case, I had a new micro SD, and the cam was fully charged. I followed instructions for firmware update through Intellistudio, however when turning the camera on the shutter button would not trigger the firmware installation so I copied the latest firmware to the card and thereafter the firmware install.seemed. to go ok - until i powered on and the LCD no longer activates. At this point I can only power the camera off - any other button crashes the camera. I can however navigate all menu's and even connect to a PC.

I'm about to called the shop and ask for an exchange. Manuboy wrote: I have had EXACTLY the same thing happen. In my case, I had a new micro SD, and the cam was fully charged. I got in touch with samsung and they reckon it's not a 'firmware fault' Obviously it is if it happened to you too! Jsemple123 wrote: Manuboy wrote: I have had EXACTLY the same thing happen. In my case, I had a new micro SD, and the cam was fully charged.

Brian Been racking my brains and can't figure out (Never got that far to figure it out as the camers'a not working) Something to do with settings or.who knows. I pointed the representative from samsung to this thread and he adknowledged it.

Passing it on to the digital imaging team apparently to review the firmware to see if that's the problem. Something obviously not right though if their own files are causing camera's to break down. Something obviously not right though if their own files are causing camera's to break down Samsung firmware support is abysmal, but to give them credit it is a lot better than it was a couple of years ago, but they still have a long way to go before the mess is sorted out, and I have only been considering the EX1 support, who knows what surprises wait for owners of other models. One problem here is the OP said he did not think a brand new card needed formatting in the camera. It definitely does and also if it has been used in any other camera especially if you are using it for firmware update.

The formatting will add any folders and files required by the camera and these may be pretty complex. The card is best clean of any extraneous files not put on it during the formatting process apart from the firmware file which should be placed exactly where the update instructions tell you. Also it is best not to rearrange or delete files on the card using a PC but do it all in camera if at all possible. People say that removing the battery and letting the camera's internal battery run down can force a complete cold restart for many cameras that can bring them back to life.
