Morgan Brian Named Finalist For Mac

Three Cavaliers were named to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List today, as announced by the Missouri Athletic Club and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. On the men's side, senior forward Will Bates represents the Cavaliers, while on the women's side, the Hoos are represented by sophomore midfielder Morgan Brian and senior forward Caroline Miller. The MAC Herman Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer presented annually in January during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St.

Before his season was cut short due to an knee injury on October 21 last year, Bates ranked seventh nationally in goals. He finished the season ranked 13th nationally in goals and 15th in points. He was named to the NSCAA All-South Region second team and All-ACC first team.

Virginia is one of just nine schools with two players to the women's watch list. Brian is one of just nine players who were named at least a semifinalist last year. She was named the Soccer America National Freshman of the Year, ACC Freshman of the Year, NSCAA All-American first team, and Soccer America MVP second team, among other awards. Miller started 22 of 24 games last season and racked up such accolades as NSCAA All-American third team, NSCAA All-Southeast Region first team, and All-ACC first team.She tied for ACC lead with seven goals in conference play. Each list will be narrowed down by NSCAA members from Division I programs to 15 semifinalists by November 29. Member coaches and, for the first time ever, fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced December 6. The winners will be announced at the awards' banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, Jan.

It marks the third consecutive year that has had a finalist for collegiate soccer’s most prestigious award. Brian, the reigning winner, joins Dagny Brynjarsdottir of and Sam Mewis of as this year’s women’s finalists. Alex Bono of Syracuse, Andy Craven of and Leo Stolz of are the three men’s finalists.

The finalists will be honored and the men’s and women’s winners will be announced at the banquet on January 9 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Brian had 10 goals and 14 assists this season, appearing in 18 games as the Cavaliers reached the final for the first time. The first three-time first-team All-American in history, she was named the 2014 U.S. Young Female Athlete of the Year. Brian missed eight games this season because of international duty as she was the only collegiate player on the United States Women’s National Team for the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying tournament in October. Upon her return to the lineup, she was the leading scorer in this year’s Tournament with four goals and nine assists, including tying the Tournament single-game record with five assists in the 8-0 first-round victory over.

If Brian wins the 2014 award, she would become the fourth women’s player to be honored in consecutive years. Mia Hamm of won the in 1992 and 1993, Cindy Parlow of won the award in 1997 and 1998 and Christine Sinclair of Portland won the award in 2004 and 2005. The is voted upon by Division I coaches who are members. In addition, an online fan vote contributed to the selection process.
